The Power of Play Series: Yes! And…. It’s all about You!

SpeakersBriana (Bree) Tierno, John-Michael Maury, and Dan Sipp

Jump into this interactive workshop to learn new methods of engagement for the development of oneself. In this session, join Briana Tierno and John-Michael Maury as these Medical Improv Collaborators take you on a dynamic (and playful!) learning journey of self-discovery through attunement, self-compassion, and adaptability. Participants will experience interactive exercises that exemplify how improvisation can be utilized as an applied art to foster present-moment awareness and flexibility. Skills acquired through improv can be employed as tools to help learners navigate challenges in their day-to-day life and promote resilience.

Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to practice deep attunement, self-compassion, and adaptability through improv exercises. This practice will help develop the skills necessary to navigate both our personal and professional worlds with confidence and empowerment. Improvisation and the performing arts can be transformative when they “jar us from a place of complacency to one of empathy and action while still allowing the participants to return to a ‘safe’ state of normalcy.” (Cerceo et al., 2022)

Conflict Management For the Authentic SP Educator

Speaker: Bob Kiser, CEC, CHSE

Conflicts, whether trivial or complex, can sometimes be defused with a straightforward dialogue. Yet, in many cases, they can escalate into overwhelming turmoil, taking a heavy toll on all involved. Unaddressed or mishandled conflicts not only chip away at productivity and team unity but also lead to increased absenteeism and turnover, with repercussions that can sever personal and professional bonds. Indeed, the ramifications of poorly managed conflict are far-reaching, contributing to an annual loss exceeding $350 billion USD in workplace performance (Picincu, A, 2019).

For Simulationists, mastering conflict management is not just beneficial—it's imperative. Shying away from conflict might provide temporary solace, but adept conflict management is a formidable asset that paves the way for innovation and insightful breakthroughs. This workshop transcends mere discussion of conflict resolution techniques. Embark on a collective, hands-on journey to actively engage in, and practice, essential skills for recognizing, addressing, and defusing conflicts.

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Appraise self-reactions to difficult conversations
  • Integrate 3 de-escalation skills in non-violent conflict
  • Internalize the differences between “positions” vs “interests” to encourage collaborative decision-making
